海外ドラマ「ビッグバンセオリー」シーズン１エピソード５を英語字幕で見た感想です。
冒頭は南北戦争を再現したボードゲームで遊んでいる感じですね。
架空のキャラも入り乱れていますが。
ハワードから、
The Hindu Gods against the entire Union army?
と、ガネーシャやシヴァなどのインドの神様がunion army、つまり南北戦争の北軍にかなうのかと言われたラジが、
Excuse me, Ganesh is the remover of obstacles, and Shiva is the destroyer. When the smoke clears, Abraham Lincoln will be speaking Hindi and drinking mint juleps.
と返したのには笑いましたが、mint julepsはバーボンベースのカクテルで、アメリカ南部で良く飲まれていることから引き合いに出されています。
その後、レナードは、店で偶然出会ったレズリーにペニーを紹介します。
Lesley, this is Penny, she lives across the hall from Sheldon and me.
と、続いてハワードが
And walks in quiet beauty like the night.
と言いますが、これは詩人バイロンの最も有名な詩の一節、She walks in beauty, like the nightを踏まえています。
レズリーは楽団のチェロ奏者としてレナードを誘いますが、レナードの前のチェロ奏者について、
He switched over to high energy radiation research, had a little mishap, and now the other guys are uncomfortable sitting next to him.
と言っています。
彼は高エネルギー放射線研究科に移って小さな事故に会ったから、他の人が隣に座りたがらないのよ、という意味ですが、つまり放射線を浴びているから他の人が近づきたがらないということですね。
練習もレナードの家ですることになりますが、なんで大学でやらないの？と尋ねるレナードに対してレズリーは、
Yeah, the department of energy said our regular space is kind of a hot zone.
と返しています。ここのhot zoneは放射能汚染地域ということです。
チェロができるの？と驚くペニーに、レナードは
Yeah, my parents felt that naming me Leonard and putting me in advanced placement classes wasn’t getting me beaten up enough.
と、親からやらされたと言っています。ここでLeonardと名付けられたことを嫌がっていることがわかりますが、これは名前にnard（オタク）が入っているからということが後のエピソードでわかります。
シーンが変わり、レナードがシェルドンに
What did Penny mean, you’d make a cute couple?
と聞いたのに対してシェルドンは、レナードとレズリーがお似合いのカップルになるという意味だよ、と言い、続けて、
An alternate, and somewhat less likely interpretation, is that you could manufacture one. As in, oh look, Leonard and Lesley made Mr and Mrs Goldfarb, aren’t they adorable.
と言っています。make a cute coupleを、文字通り（他人の）カップルを作り出すと考えるわけですね。レナードとレズリーがゴールドファーブ夫妻を作った？ということです。例に出されているゴールドファーブという名前の人は後のエピソードで登場します。
続いてのレナードのセリフ、
If Penny didn’t know that Lesley had already turned me down then that would unambiguously mean that she, Penny, thought that I should her, Lesley, out, indicating that she, Penny, had no interest in me asking her, Penny, out. But because she did know that I had asked Lesley out and that she, Lesley, had turned me down then she, Penny, could be offering consolation. That’s too bad, you would have made a cute couple. But while thinking, good, Leonard remains available.
の部分はsheが誰を指すかをいちいち付け加えていて、しかもかなりの早口で喋っているので、見ていて理解が全く追いつきませんでした・・・。
その後のレナードとレズリーのシーンで、レズリーがペニーのことを話題に出して、
Well, I thought I saw your pupils dilate when you looked at her, which, unless you’re a heroin addict, points to sexual attraction.
と言いますが、ここのpupilはもちろん生徒ではなく、瞳孔の意味です。pupils dilateで「瞳孔が拡大する」。
かなり飛ばしますが、ペニーにレズリーとの関係を知られたことで動揺するレナードに対して、シェルドンが
Do you realize I may have to share a Nobel Prize with your booty call?
と言います。share a Nobel Prize withでノーベル賞を共有するということですが、誰と、の部分がyour booty callとなっています。booty callは関係を持つためだけの電話、ということで、ここではレズリーのことを指しています。
これより前のシーンでレズリーがシェルドンに方程式の誤りを指摘したことから、レズリーも研究に寄与したとしてノーベル賞を共同受賞しなきゃならないかも、ということですね。
終盤で、ハワードも
The blogosphere is a-buzzing with news of you and Lesley Winkle making eine kleine bang-bang music.
とレナードをからかいますが、eine kleine bang-bang musicとは、モーツァルトのアイネ・クライネ・ナハトムジークをもじった言葉遊びですね。
なお最後のレナードの
You know, you can grow the ingredients for soup.
は、その前にシェルドンが言った、
Yeah, the name always confused me anyway, Soup Plantation. You can’t grow soup.
への意趣返しです・・・が、確かにスープの材料は育てられますが、スープ自体は育てられないので、あんまり意趣返しになっていない気がします。
以上、ほぼ解説に終始した感想でした。
